Over the past month, we’ve broken down how to answer the essay prompts for some very prestigious scholarships—the, the, and the —and today, in our last Scholarship column, we’re going to recap the four key strategies to writing effective essays, and explaining how they relate to scholarships due this May while we’re at it. Pick one moment. The ($1,250, due 5/31) requires two essays, the first of which asks: In less than 500 words, please tell us what the idea of LIKE ME means to you? How have you lived this message in your life? I’d like to repeat something for emphasis: in less than 500 words. It is tempting to think that essays are asking you to explain every time you’ve ever exhibited a quality or completed an activity, but go for quality, not quantity. Tell a single story. Be memorable not because you’re bragging, but because your story is something the scholarship readers could call up their mom about and re-tell. Create a case for who you’re going to be based on what you’ve done in the past. The ($1,000, due 5/30) for current cosmetology students asks applicants to write a 300 word essay answering the prompt: Why are you pursuing a cosmetology degree and how will you use this degree to better the lives of others? You could take this prompt in one of two directions. Free Cosmetology ScholarshipsOne: write one paragraph about why you’re pursuing a cosmetology degree, including a couple of details about your relationship with the profession, and a second paragraph explaining how you want to bring beauty to the world and confidence to the lives of hundreds of people, or create lasting relationships with your clients Or you could tell a single story about a time when—as a cosmetologist, or hair stylist, or friend, or even as a client—that you saw cosmetology change the world for the better and let your story speak for you. Imagine reading the story of someone who painted her best friend’s nails for her when her arm was broken, or used a home makeover to deal with a crushed spirit, and how the beauty of that moment will make glaringly, totally obvious how you will better the world through your profession. ![]() (I promise: your specific story of how you learned to love this profession is more powerful than any situation I can make up.) The (renewable $1,000, due 5/23) for first generation students gives high school seniors this reflection-based prompt: What does it mean to you to be among the first in your family to attend college? It is so, so, so easy to respond to prompts like this with explaining that amounts to little more than a list of feelings. Do not do that. Or rather—don’t stop there. What does it mean to you to be among the first in your family to attend college? Then ask yourself: when did I put those feelings into action? Find a moment that illustrates what it means to you, whether it’s the conversation you had with your dad in the car, the homework assignment you didn’t give up on, the job you took on weekends, or the time you took to tutor your baby brother. Then go over your draft and cut every sentence that sounds like anything any other first generation student could say. Stay out of your head, and show your dedication and struggle and excitement and pride through your actions. You’ll stand out. Answer the question they ask, keeping in mind why they ask it. A lot of scholarship prompts have obvious reasoning behind them. “Why do you want to be a software engineer?” “How has the study of music improved your life?” and so on. ![]() The questions are aligned with the scholarship itself. Some, however, are odder than others. ($1,000, due 5/30), is looking for high school, college, and graduate students who are “deserving”—based on a number of factors, including GPA, financial hardship, and commitment to their heritage, as well as “persistence, dedication, idealism, perseverance, success and humility.” One of the essay questions is: What is the most valuable asset you have or will have in your lifetime? Answer this question keeping in mind why they are asking it. Do you have persistence, dedication, idealism, or any of the other qualities listed in the description? If you do, how can you demonstrate it? Answer that question on your own, keeping in mind the previous rules, and you are well on your way to winning scholarships and getting money.
